Review wins first place awards

The Weyburn Review brought back three first place awards and three honourable mentions from the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association's Better Newspapers Competition, announced during the association's fall convention held Sept. 22-24 in Regina.

In the category of Best Special Section, this newspaper won for A Century in Review, our historic account of the Weyburn area over the last 100 years, which included coverage of major provincial milestones and numerous photos from each decade.

This paper also took top prize for Editorial Writing Excellence for papers with a circulation of 3,001 or more, and won a Best Education Coverage award for Greg Nikkel's feature story on the Second Step program in Weyburn's elementary schools entitled, "A pro-active step."

Honourable mentions were given to the Review in the category of Best Tourism Story for Greg Nikkel's article on the re-creation of the North West Mounted Police trek west; the category of Life in the Community for Kirsten Leatherdale's feature story on the community spirit of Reinhard Eisbrenner; and in the category of Best Business Editorial.
