The Weyburn horticultural society held its annual awards night on Wednesday night at the Signal Hill Arts Centre. The grand championship, the D. J. Mitchell Silver Cup, awarded to the person with the most points from all categories, was awarded to Gennie Girardin. There were 18 trophies in total handed out to the entrants, including 12 individual trophies, four grand aggregate trophies and the grand championship. The winners of the grand aggregate trophies are as follows: The C. W. Steele Silver Cup, awarded to the person with the highest total points for all glads, was presented to Leeta Whitrow. The Young Fellows Silver Cup, awarded to the person with the highest total of points for all flowers, was presented to Gennie Girardin. The Jim Weir Silver Cup, awarded to the person with the highest total of points for all vegetables, was presented to Julia Mandgiak. The (Junior) Swift Memorial Cup, awarded to the person with the highest total points from the junior class, was awarded to Nicole Stein. The Hazel Straker Plaque, awarded to the person with the best display of wild flowers, was presented to Nicole Stein. The Eve Hornell Trophy, awarded to the person with the best house plant, was presented to Gorette Pennington. The Jeanne Procknow Trophy, awarded to the person who has the best display of flowers, was presented to Meta Murray. The Quick Trophy is awarded to the person who has the best collection of roses. There were no entries for the award. The Gennie Girardin Trophy is awarded to the person who has the best vase of basket display of sweet peas. The winner was Leeta Whitrow. The Weyburn Horticultural Society Trophy, awarded to the person who has the best Dahlia, was won by Goretti Pennington. The George and Anne Pierce Trophy, awarded to the person who has the best three spikes of glads, was won by Leeta Whitrow. The Ann Pierce Trophy is awarded to the arrangement nominated by the spectators. The winner was Cheuto Goodwin. The Sam Beggs Trophy is awarded to the person with the best plot of potatoes, and this year's winner was Mary Bakaluk. The C.H. Hurst Trophy, awarded to the person who has the best plot of potatoes, was presented to Gennie Girardin. The J.H. Spence Trophy is awarded to the person with the best plot of apple crabs. The winner was Janet VanWinKoop. The Alice Walter Trophy is awarded to the person with the best collection of fruits. The winner was Janet VanWinKoop. The Ronald McDonald Trophy, awarded to the person with the best agricultural novelty, was won by Nicole Stein. The weekend specials held at the Weyburn Square Mall were awarded as well. For tulips, Opal Ernst took home a $15 gift certificate. The peonies contest winner was Arvella Carleton, who took home a $20 gift certificate and a $10 check from the society. The plaque for best tea roses went to Grace Plonka; the winner for miniature roses was Gennie Girardin; the plaque for shrub roses went to Arvilla Carleton, and the top prize for lilies went to Betty Kerr. The weekend specials were held every Thursday at the mall as soon as tulips started to bloom and continued weekly. |
