A successful 2000 season comes to a close for golf club

After a long, dry and hot summer the Weyburn Golf Club is deeming the 2000 season as a great success.

With spring weather warmer and drier than last season, the club kicked off the season close to a month ahead of last year with all 18 holes open on March 24.

"We had an outstanding season," said club pro Rod Carroll. "We stared a month earlier than usual. Last year the spring was awful and this year the weather was great all year which helps revenues."

With the longer season the golf club reported an increase of 10 to 15 per cent in pro shop revenues and green fees.

Highlighting the 2000 season at the club were seven major tournaments which included: the Labatt Crocus, the Jim Rose Memorial, the Member/Guest Tournament, the Red Wing Alumni Tournament, the Farmer's Tournament, the Weyburn Oilmen's Tournament and the John Knox Memorial.

As well the club played host to annual events such as a stop on the provincial junior tour, the senior ladies open, the ladies open and the senior men's open.

Carroll said the shape the course is in and the long season were also highlights.

"We had a new greenskeeper (Lachlan Reeve) who did an excellent job," said Carroll. "All in all it was a very good year."
