Thirty-seven years after the Millers and Buckners put Weyburn on the national mixed curling scene, this city will once again be highlighted as we host the National Mixed Curling Championship, Jan. 6-14, 2001. The sponsorship drive is 90 per cent finished, and tickets for the general public have been printed and are on sale. Event passes, which will gain the holder access to the week's worth of curling (up to 24 draws) at the Colosseum, are being sold in advance for $75. After Dec. 1, that price will go up to $100. The marketing and promotion committee has already sold 260 advance event passes, with a target of 800 to 1,000. There will also be weekend passes sold after Dec. 1. Day and draw passes can only be purchased at the door. To order an event pass, contact Marilyn Charlton at the Weyburn Agricultural Society office, or phone the Weyburn Curling Club. The public is also welcome to attend an awards banquet on Saturday, Jan. 13 at McKenna Hall. Tickets cost $25, and go on sale after Oct. 30. They can be purchased at the curling rink. The entertainment committee is presently lining up acts for the Rock and Rail House, a lounge which will be set up for the week in the curling rink where the ice currently is. Volunteers and officials are still needed for the week of curling and to help with the events that accompany it. Setting up and taking down the converted curling rink in the Colosseum and working in the lounge are a couple of the duties volunteers could fill. People interested in volunteering should call Scott McLeod. A training session for officials will be held Nov. 17. Anyone from Weyburn or the surrounding area who is already certified as a curling official, or who would like to volunteer for the job, should call Randy Vopni in the Weyburn directory. For more information, check out the National Mixed Curling Championship Web site, which can be accessed through a link on the City of Weyburn's Web page. The 2001 Canadian Mixed Host Committee includes the following people: Harry Plemel, chair; Glenn Tollefson, vice-chair and marketing; Mel Hoffman, marketing and promotion; Garnet Hart, facilities and construction; Scott McLeod, volunteers; Perry Nurse, finance; Linda Porth, hosting; Bob Smith, lounge; Darlene MacNaughton and Yvonne Kerr, entertainment and decorating; and Kim Bent, secretary. |
