Planning for the Weyburn Comprehensive School's Career Fair 2000 is nearly complete, with Weyburn native Paul Martin set to be a keynote speaker for the event on Wednesday, Nov. 8. The fair will be an opportunity for students, parents and the public to attend from 1 to 8 p.m. as more than 20 post-secondary institutions and over 60 professions and businesses will be on hand to make presentations. The event will start with a talk by Paul Martin on the topic, "Think so big your head will explode." He will speak at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium. Organizers expect over 1,000 people to attend, including many schools from surrounding areas. Halloween is coming and the SRC is sponsoring a Halloween dance on Friday, Oct. 27; this will be a closed dance for Comp students, who will be allowed to bring a guest with permission. The SRC has also been holding a number of events to help raise money for this weekend's Communithon fund-raiser, including a chicken-drop contest, penny wars and the Annoying Song contest. WCS musical groups and some students will be helping to provide entertainment at Communithon as well. There will be no school for students on Monday, Oct. 30, as this is a professional development day for teachers. Four WCS students had a successful debate tournament in Regina over the weekend. Marcie Becker and Mike Tourand placed third in the Division IV novice category while Ali Naini and Devon Dubnyk placed third in the Division IV open category. Ali was also chosen as one of four Saskatchewan students to attend the Western Canadian Debate Tournament to be held in B.C. The Comp Eagles football team will play a Stewart Conference playoff game today, Oct. 25, at 5:45 p.m. in Regina versus Miller. If Weyburn wins the game, their next playoff game will be on Monday, Oct. 30. If they lose, their season will be over. The girls volleyball team placed second in the Swift Current tournament over the weekend, losing to Prince Albert Carlton in the final. They will play in a tournament in Moose Jaw this coming weekend; meanwhile the boys lost in the quarter-finals of a tournament in Moose Jaw. The Grade 10 boys volleyball team won the Weyburn Junior High mini-tournament. The boys soccer team failed to advance in the playoffs after losing to Estevan, but they did have some highlights in their first season. The Comp gymnasium will be the location on Wednesday, Nov. 1, for an exhibition fund-raising basketball game featuring a midget basketball team. Also next Wednesday, the second half of the Red Coat Volleyball Series will take place in Estevan. WCS has the lead in this event of six games to two. Two upcoming events to mark on the calendar include the drama presentation on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 20 and 21, and the fowl supper will be held on Monday, Nov. 27. Plan to vote in the federal election and then come to the Comp for a turkey supper along with entertainment by WCS students. |
