The power of the poppy

Nick Elchuk, an executive member of Weyburn's Royal Canadian Legion and a veteran of the Second World War, pins a poppy on four-year-old Landon Franklin at the mall on Friday. Proceeds from the sale of the traditional symbol of Remembrance Day go towards poppy campaign expenses and to provide assistance to ex-servicemen and women who may require food, shelter or medical services. The local Legion raises an average of $12,000 through poppy sales and wreaths in advance of Remembrance Day on Nov. 11. This year's ceremonies begin at 10:30 a.m. at the cenotaph on Third Street, then move into the Legion Hall for a service. Check out the Nov. 8 issue of the Weyburn Review for a feature story on this year's War Mother Wilhelmina Wilson and her husband Sid.

News:

Blocked in

Lois Morton and her granddaughter, MacKenzie O'Dell, find themselves blocked in Morton's driveway on Fifth Street Thursday morning, as wet, heavy snow caused the trees lining the driveway to bend under the weight. The 20 cm of snow that fell on Wednesday and Thursday caused several bushes and trees to bend or snap, clogged streets and downed power lines. Power was off and on in 1,500 Weyburn and area homes and businesses throughout Wednesday night and Thursday. In some rural areas, power wasn't restored until Saturday. A second snow storm hit the area on Monday, dumping around 30 cm as of Tuesday, causing many cancellations of events and meetings, with more snow possible this week. For more information on the snow storms check out the Nov. 8 issue of the Review.
