Despite the foul weather, several major changes occurring in the Canadian Cancer Society, including a change in logo and the inception of a new annual event, were announced at the 15th annual meeting of the Weyburn Southeast Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society last Wednesday. Margaret Hill, manager of the Southeast Unit, said the weather played havoc with the meeting, which had already been rescheduled from Nov. 2, preventing several members and guest speakers from attending. However, the meeting went on as planned, starting at 6:30 p.m. with a congratulatory dinner for its volunteers and corporate sponsors. The caduceus, the national logo of the society, was announced to be retired later this month and replaced by a yellow daffodil, which will soon premiere on all society materials and broadcasts. The first Cancer Research Day was also announced to take place in conjunction with the society's annual conference. The event will feature a public question and answer period with cancer researchers, and information about cancer will be given out. The event takes place in Saskatoon on Nov. 18 at the Radisson Hotel. The Saskatchewan division of the society will also have a new web site up and running at the end of November. Until now, the division had been represented on the Internet by an addition to the existing national web site. The annual financial report was also read at the meeting, with the society receiving about $194,704 from memorial donations, campaigning, and fund-raising events, an increase of about $15,000 from last year. Dolores Herring, president of the Southeast Unit board, read a letter from John McWilliams, second vice-president of the society's Saskatchewan division. He congratulated the Southeast Unit for its fund-raising, and also promised hope for the future. "This year has been very good for the Canadian Cancer Society's fund-raising efforts," the letter read. "We now stand on the threshold of a new era in cancer research." Certificates of appreciation were given out to campaigners showing an exceptional devotion of time and effort, as well as two Cancer 500 stickers to those donating more than $500 to the society. As well, the 15 corporate sponsors of the Jamboree were recognized. Elections were also held for vacant seats on the Southeast Unit Board, but no new members were voted in. Although the weather prevented guest speaker Lillian Alexus, manager of the Cancer Information Service (CIS), from attending the meeting, a video was shown explaining the operation of the CIS. |
