Moose Jaw may have its tunnels and murals, but so have we. Weyburn has at least one tunnel between Souris Valley and the Psyche Centre. As for murals, there is one on the north wall of Second Glance on Second Street.

Now the Soo Line Historical Museum can boast three murals painted on three south windows. The paintings were done by Des Villness and Samantha Salisbury, two Grade 12 students from Weyburn Comprehensive, who volunteered their services after Brenda King called for volunteers.

The reason for covering the windows was because those nasty caragana bugs seemed to want to homestead there, making the windows rather ugly.

Des, who was more or less the project manager, and Samantha put on two coats of white paint. They sketched the outline using a picture of Third Street East for their subject. They then filled in the colouring using black, white, and grey tones.

The members of the society have to be very grateful to Ken Kot from Fisk Repair for the loan of the scaffold, at no charge. Ken also put up and took down the scaffolding, which was up since about Sept. 17. The girls had to stop for a few days because of snow. They did their work after school hours. The project took several weeks.

The scene on the east window shows the Singer Sewing Machine, Four Star Taxi and the Cafe, which is owned by Norman Buss if memory serves me correctly. The middle window shows the Quick Freeze, Simpsons and Arnott Electric, Dora's Shoppe and Charnells. Moving along still on Third Street East, there is the Soo Theatre, Star Bakery, and Canadian Legion and City Hall on the third window. Of all these three buildings, only the City Hall, Canadian Legion, and Dora's Shoppe retain the same business names.

Next time you are at the museum, take time to either walk or drive around to the south side of the building and view the artwork done by these two girls, whom we thank for their endeavours, as well as Fisk Repair for the loan of their scaffolds.
