Weyburn's PanCanadian Drillers, the 2000 Midget B Provincial Champions, opened their new season with a win and a tie in league action this past week.

In the league opener, the Drillers defeated the Southeast Cougars 5-2 in a game played at Arcola last Wednesday.

Jody Anderson opened the scoring on an unassisted goal just six seconds into the contest, but the Cougars rebounded to tie the game midway through the first period. However, three unanswered goals in the second frame proved to be the difference. Jenn Dodd on a feed from Raelyn Hanowski gave the Drillers a lead they would not relinquish while Anderson's second goal on an assist from Danielle McLeod would prove to be the winner.

Dodd's second goal with an assist from Jen Sargent rounded out the period scoring. The teams exchanged markers in the third with Georgia Siourounis adding the fifth goal on an assist from Amy Tollefson.

In their home opener against Moose Jaw on Sunday evening, a parade of penalties eventually forced the Drillers to settle for a 3-3 tie.

Despite playing shorthanded much of the game, Weyburn was able to maintain a lead through most of the contest only to see it evaporate in the third. Shelly Verbeurgt's point shot late in the first period had opened the scoring for Weyburn and Hanowski's goal following a Moose Jaw power play marker in the second had restored a 2-1 lead coming into the third. Anderson and Lynsey MacInnis were credited with assists on both.

Megan Leach's goal on an assist from Tollefson midway through the third appeared to be an insurance marker but penalties continued to plague the Drillers and Moose Jaw capitalized with a pair of power play goals less than a minute apart to tie the score. In total, Weyburn was assessed 16 penalties including two double-minors while Moose Jaw took only five minors.

The PanCanadian Drillers are competing in a newly-formed five-team league this season with teams from Moose Jaw, Estevan, Strasbourg and Carlyle. Team members include Jody Anderson, Jenn Dodd, Raelyn Hanowski, Megan Leach, Lynsey MacInnis, Heather Maloney, Danielle McLeod, Jodie Murray, Jen Sargent, Amy Scheers, Georgia Siourounis, Amy Tollefson, Shelly Verbeurgt and Memory Williamson. Coaches are Tyson Calladine, Don McLeod and Don Anderson.
