Oungre man goes missing during storm

A man who went missing at the height of the last snow storm turned up all right but disoriented just as a rescue team arrived to look for him.

A team of RCMP officers and volunteers were mobilized from Weyburn to try and find Lavern Lotten, an Oungre-area farmer who left his house late on Nov. 6 in his tractor to feed his cattle.

He hadn't returned by the next morning, so the family first called the RM of Souris Valley office, and it was determined the roads to the Lotten farm were not passable. Ed Roncin went out to try and open a passage to the farm while a call was made to the Weyburn RCMP. They in turn called on the Weyburn Snowmobile Club for volunteers, and five members volunteered.

Several four-wheel trucks and nine people left Weyburn, and were informed when they arrived at Oungre that Lotten had shown up at his farm home, disoriented and suffering from hypothermia. The rescue team was asked to try and reach the farm in case Lotten needed medical attention.

The team made it after a long effort going through the snow, but by that time Lotten's condition had improved and he decided to stay at home.

RCMP characterized the weather at the time as "critical and life-threatening to all persons involved."

Those who were part of the team included Ed Roncin, Bruce Kravanya, Lee Garinger, Phil Babiarz, Steve Van De Sype, Rodney Pickering, Const. Stacey Fishley, Const. Matthew Matthews, Const. David Domoney and Cpl. Art Hopkins.
