There will be one less group operating at the Weyburn Comprehensive School this year, as Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) will not be able to form due to a lack of interest from students. A core group of Grade 12 students were at first unwilling to let the group die, said guidance counsellor Len Ernst, who was the staff liaison for the group. They approached Grade 10 students to try and gather some interest, but there was no response. "They feel really bad about letting it go. Another year if we can get recruits from Grade 10, we can get it going again," said Ernst. He noted the five Grade 12 students will get especially busy in the second semester as graduation approaches, so they wouldn't be able to commit much time towards organizing events for SADD. "It's a very unfortunate situation. Some of the kids have other commitments. It's a matter of how long do you carry on before you realize it's not going to go," he said. SADD had organized a number of activities in the past to relay the idea of not drinking and driving, including Dead Day, in which students dress up as a dead person to symbolize the number of people who are killed in a day by drunk drivers. |
