Bringing the Comprehensive High School's alternative school program under the board's annual budget was one of the motions passed at the Comp board meeting on Thursday. In her report, director of education Jan Chell asked the board to consider funding the alternate school program as other Comp programs, thereby sparing the program being charged a separate tuition. "It would be of definite benefit to the students," she said. Trustee Justin Brown suggested funding for the alternate school should be on a per-student basis, meaning each school pays for the number of students within the alternate school. However, Chell said this might leave some schools paying for most or all of the program, if their numbers were higher than other years. Chell also said alternate school students had established its new name as the BRIDGE, which stands for Broadening Responsible and Independent Decision in Goals and Education. Chell reported plans are also in order for application of the $150,000 PanCanadian Legacy Gift, which was donated to Weyburn schools recently for the implementation of amulti-media learning lab. "It's the beginning stages of a fine plan of technology," she said. In his report, secretary-treasurer Gord Young said a sizable drift of snow had collected on the roof above the Industrial Arts labs, causing heavy leakage. A motion was passed to submit a proposal to have repairs done on the roof. Comp vice-principal Jesse Shupe also announced the launch of the Student Advisor System (SAS), which will hold its first meeting today. The SAS is aimed at improving teacher and student relations and more readily identify problems within the student body by holding bi-weekly meetings between groups of students and teachers. Members of the board were also appointed to various committees, and Donnett Elder and Justin Brown were elected as chairperson and vice-chairperson respectively. |
