Weyburn Devils lose out 8-6 to Bienfait in seesaw rematch

By KEVIN BERGER, of The Weyburn Review

Weyburn Inn Devils weren't able to score a second victory against the Bienfait Coalers on Sunday, losing 8-6 after a match which seemed to swing back and forth.

Coach Neil Hastings said the quality of the play this time around against the Coalers was much better in this match than their game on Nov. 24. "Overall, it was a good positive attitude," he said.

However, Hastings said the Coalers were able to grab the final advantage by monopolizing on a few last-minute penalty calls on the Devils. "We took some bad penalties in the third which put us in the hole," he said, pointing out Craig Rodine's four-minute penalty for butt-ending as an example.

Brian Burgass and Willy Mason were able to score early in the first period, but were answered quickly by another two goals by Bienfait. The Coalers retained the edge starting out in the second with two quick goals, but the Devils then leaped back and scored three of their own from Regan Redekopp, Jason Johnstone, and Kris Hockley, ending the second at 5-4 for the Devils.

Things fell apart in the third, however, when the Devils managed only a single goal by Hockley and were outpaced by the Coalers with three goals, leaving the Devils down in the final minutes.

The game then finished with an ironic twist for the Devils after pulling their goalie and allowing the Coalers an empty net goal, the same move which cemented the victory for the Devils in their last game against Bienfait.

The Devils were supposed to play a home-game rematch against Carnduff on Friday, but were forced to cancel after Carnduff reported half of their team were ill with the flu bug.

Next up for the Devils will be a game against Redvers on their home turf on Friday, and a home game against Carlyle Sunday at the Colosseum; both games start at 7:30 p.m.

The Devils have not yet played Carlyle, said Hastings, which is currently at first place in the Big Six League. "I feel they will be a good test for us," he said.
