Christmas programs and services set at city churches

Special programs to celebrate the Christmas season are being planned at most of Weyburn's churches through the month of December.

The Salvation Army kicked things off on Saturday, Dec. 2, with their bubble in the Weyburn Square Mall to collect funds for the Christmas hampers distributed by the church to the needy in Weyburn.

The bubble will be in the mall throughout December, up to and including Dec. 23.

The church will also host their annual Christmas supper on Dec. 23, starting at 4:30 p.m., for those who will be alone during the holiday season. Those interested in attending need to sign up at the church by Dec. 20.

All Saints Anglican Church will have a number of programs for Christmas, including their annual Christmas memorial service on Sunday, Dec. 10, starting at 7 p.m.

This service is for people, family members or friends of those who have passed away, said Rev. Julie Collings, adding anyone is welcome to attend.

Along with this service, the church is inviting people to purchase lights for their Tree of Love to remember their loved ones. The proceeds from this fund-raiser will not stay in the church, but will go towards special needs in Weyburn and area.

The Anglican church will also have a service of lessons and carols on Dec. 17 at 10:30 a.m., and a family eucharist will be held on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, starting at 7 p.m. A Christmas Day eucharist will be held at 10:30 a.m.

At Calvary Baptist Church, a Christmas banquet will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at the Wheatland Seniors Centre, starting at 6:30 p.m. A short Christmas program will follow the supper.

A Sunday School Christmas program will be held at Silver Heights Bible Church on Dec. 10 starting at 7 p.m., and an adult Christmas banquet will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the church for the event, to be held at McKenna Hall. Entertainment will be provided by the quartet, the Last Mountain Boys.

The various choirs of Grace United Church will perform throughout December, the senior choir cantata on Dec. 10, and the youth choir play on Dec. 17, at the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services each Sunday.

In addition, the church will host a "Blue Christmas" service on Wednesday, Dec. 20, a worship time for those experiencing a difficult time in life due to bereavement, painful memories and loneliness. The service starts at 7:30 p.m.

Christmas Eve services will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 24, with a Sunday School Christmas party to be held during the morning service.

A Sunday School Christmas program will be held at the Free Methodist Church on Dec. 17 starting at 6 p.m., and a family Christmas Eve service will be held on Dec. 24 at 6 p.m.

At Zion Lutheran Church, the Sunday School children will perform their program on Dec. 17 during the 10 a.m. service. A Christmas Eve family worship service will be held at 7 p.m., followed by Christmas Eve communion at 11 p.m., and communion on Christmas Day at 11 a.m.

The church is also hosting the Quota Festival of Carols on Sunday, Dec. 3, with performances at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.

At Knox Presbyterian Church, the church school will hold their program on Dec. 17 at 11:30 a.m., to be followed by a congregational lunch in the Knox Hall.

On Christmas Eve, communion will be held at the morning service at 10:30 a.m., and an evening service featuring carol singing and the Christmas story will take place at 7:30 p.m., with special music by the church choir.

Peace Lutheran Church's Sunday School children will put on their Christmas program on Dec. 17 starting at 7 p.m., as they stage a Christmas nativity play. On Christmas Eve, a candlelight service will be held at 9 p.m.
