The secret to their success is the mutual respect for the game and for each other. Weyburn Comprehensive School's father-daughter coaching team of Amy Ferner and Gary Frederickson came together this season to coach the girls basketball team. While fathers and daughters disagree at times, Ferner and Frederickson rarely disagree when it comes to the game. "We usually agree when it comes to basketball, or you give in to what I'm saying," Ferner joked with her father. Although it is early in the season, the coaching duo said they have enjoyed learning from each other. "I learned how to talk to the players. When I first came, I talked to them like a friend and I was sarcastic at times. My dad taught me how to talk to the players," said Ferner. Frederickson added that Ferner has brought a lot to the team. "She is close to the players' age, she has played at the university level and she is female," he said. The understanding between the coaches is Ferner takes care of the guards and Frederickson looks after the post players. "For a lot of years, I was the coach and Amy was the point guard," said Frederickson. Now Ferner has joined her father on the bench. "It's neat for me to see Amy coach because she is putting something back into the game," said Frederickson. The combination of Ferner's competitiveness and intensity is balanced by Frederickson's coaching experience. With two coaches, it makes it easier to get things done during a game. Both Ferner and Frederickson have extensive basketball backgrounds. As a child, Ferner followed her father to the gym. "She was a gym rat. She used to come with me to the gym all the time," said Frederickson. Ferner started playing basketball in Grade 4 and Frederickson started playing early and began his coaching career in Grade 12. "Bill Fletcher got me into it. We didn't have baskets, so he drew a line on the floor and we had to touch the wall behind the line with the ball," Frederickson said of playing at Haig School. This year the Eagles girls basketball team is a young but determined team. "We are both lucky in the sense that there has been a tradition of good basketball at the Comp," said Frederickson. Len Williams was the driving force behind Frederickson's coaching at Weyburn Comprehensive School. In the last 15 years, Williams had laid out some standards and paved the way for Ferner and Frederickson. "These are things we'd be struggling with if he hadn't laid the foundation," said Frederickson. During a game, one coach has a lot to contend with, but with two coaches, the game seems to go a lot smoother, said Frederickson. "The group of girls we have learn very quickly. They are really young and could go all the way," said Frederickson. "We really want to make sure the kids have a good time and look back and say that basketball was worth it and they would do it again." |
