Preparing for the Nationals

Ice makers and a volunteer crew of workers paint the four and 12-foot rings onto the Colosseum ice on Saturday, as they prepared the curling sheets for the Canadian National Mixed Curling Championships, which run Jan. 6-14. Workers began initial flooding and painting on Friday and Saturday, installed the sheet dividers on Sunday and finished flooding over the New Year's weekend. Ice makers estimated the ice would be completedly finished by today; teams from across Canada will be arriving in the next couple of days, and the opening ceremonies are slated to take place at noon on Saturday, Jan. 6, followed by the opening draw at 1 p.m.

Sorting out new clothes

Family Place staff members Krystal Browatzke, Terry Lonoway and, in behind them, Natasha Dayman, sort out some of the many clothes donated to the Family Place in recent weeks. After the clothes are sorted and stored, they are distributed to families in need who are referred to the centre by family support service workers. The staff members were having difficulties finding enough room for all the clothes that have been dropped off at the Family Place.
