A welcome fit for champions

The opening ceremonies of the 2001 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, being held in Weyburn from Jan. 6-14, kick off at the Colosseum Saturday with the piping in of a colour guard and the 12 competing teams representing each province, including two from Ontario and one team from the Yukon/Northwest Territories. Following the procession into the rink, several dignitaries including Weyburn's MP, MLA and mayor, welcomed the curlers to Weyburn and recognized the local organizing committee - chaired by Harry Plemel, who also spoke - for their hard work. Visiting the animal shelter

Young volunteer Chris Kopytko plays with one of the resident dogs at the Weyburn Humane Society's animal shelter on Thursday. The dog, who he calls Peek-a-Pooch, is a terrier beagle cross, and is about five or six years old. Many of the shelter's animals are featured in the Humane Society's Paw Prints 2001 calendar, which is still available as a fund-raiser by phoning the animal shelter.
