Singing songs from Mary Poppins

The Assiniboia Park School choir practises songs from the musical movie, Mary Poppins, during an after-school rehearsal on Wednesday. The choir, under the direction of Colleen Weimer, will be performing the numbers at the Weyburn Rotary Music Festival in March. Teachers, music instructors and students are reminded the deadline for entries to the 2001 music festival is Friday, Feb. 2.

First bed for new health centre

Isabelle Butters sits on a bed similar to what will be placed in the South Central Health District's new long-term care facility, as she hands over a cheque for $2,000 to district board chairman Ernest Elder on Wednesday. The health district is beginning a fund-raising drive for the new $17.5 million 135-bed facility, selling sponsorships of the beds for $2,000 each, and sponsorships of the 12 cottages comprising the new facility for $50,000 each. The beds to be used in the new facility will be slightly different than this one, with an electric lift installed to accommodate the Transfer Lift Repositioning safety program the health district will have in place to avoid injuries caused by lifting patients.
