Out on strike

Local members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) health care workers walk the picket line Saturday in front of the entrance to the Souris Valley Extended Care Centre. Picket lines also went up at the Weyburn General Hospital and Special Care Home. Provincially, 14,000 health care workers, including 700 workers ar the South Central Health District, went on strike at 5 a.m. Saturday after bargaining broke down over hours of work and monetary benefits, but CUPE and the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO) went back to the table this morning.

Officially opening the Oil Show

With a quick snip, Saskatchewan Energy and Mines Minister Maynard Sonntag cuts the chain held by Mayor Don Schlosser and Weyburn Oil Show Board chairman Ray Frehlick, officially opening the 2001 Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show in Weyburn on Wednesday evening. The chain-cutting was held at the Saskatchewan Oilpatch Awards, put on at the Weyburn Curling Club, where several members of the industry were honoured for their achievements in the southeast oilpatch and beyond.
