Local businesses busy fund-raising for the Communithon

Many Weyburn businesses are underway with the organizing of fund-raisers for the annual Communithon, which is coming up on the weekend of Oct. 26-27.

The Communithon is 33 hours of live broadcasting of local talent which is put on by the United Way to raise money.

Fas Gas held its customer appreciation day last weekend, raising over $190 for the Communithon by having a toonie hotdog and drink sale. Fas Gas will also be donating propane to all barbecue fund-raisers for the Communithon.

The banks of Weyburn had an early kickoff to the campaign this year by raising over $600 from a pancake breakfast at the Wheat Festival. The Co-op also held a fund-raiser on Saturday in which they donated the money raised from a toonie lunch which was held from 11-3 p.m.

Coming on the heels of Fire Prevention Week, the Weyburn Fire Brigade will be having a pancake breakfast and an open house on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 8-11 a.m.

The N.S.W.B. law firm started raising funds in September and will continue to do so for the rest of the month. The firm is having a candy, bake and book sale for all the employees of N.S.W.B.

The Weyburn Square Mall will also be fund-raising for the whole month of October with 'Pennies from Heaven'. The mall is supplying jars for all the business in which shoppers can donate their pennies.

The Dairy Queen will also be raising money one coin at a time by donating all the funds from the coin drop for the month of October.

Bonnie Bagel is selling raffle tickets for a plane ride over Weyburn for the month of October. Hometown furniture is also selling raffle tickets over the month of October with the draw date on Oct. 27. Also holding a raffle for October is Peavey Mart and McDonalds Restaurant.

The Sask. Wheat Pool, Weyburn Co-op and the Weyburn Credit Union are working together to raise funds for the United Way. All three business are sponsoring a pancake breakfast which will be held in the Community Room of the Weyburn Credit Union on Oct. 27.

The Weyburn Co-op will co-sponsor the perogie and smokie sale that will be put on by the Knights of Columbus. The sale will be held on Oct. 26-27 at McKenna Hall. Roy Chuckry will also be at the sale selling homemade chocolates.

Prairie Agencies will be donating a $1 for every license transaction from Oct. 22-26. Unique Soaps 'N Suds is designating Oct. 19 as the day they will donate 50 cents from every carnation sold.

Gone Hollywood will donate 10 cents from every rental sold between the dates of Oct. 19-25. The Weyburn Inn will be donating 50 cents from every cup of coffee sold on Oct. 26.

The CIBC bank is hosting an office chair relay challenge to do their part in the fund-raising. The challenge is extended to all the banks in Weyburn to design an office chair to race and to also collect pledges which go to the Communithon. The race will take place on Oct. 26 at approximately 9 a.m. Racers will start in front of City Hall and the finish line is at the intersection in front of the Royal and CIBC banks.

The staff and students of Southeast Regional College will be banding together to raise funds in a three-day event. On Oct. 23 they will be having either a bake sale or a chili day, Oct. 24 will be popcorn day and on the last day there will be a hotdog sale.
