After a losing streak of three straight games, the Weyburn Comp Eagles finally soared to their first victory of the season against the Notre Dame Hounds on Friday, defeating the team 14-0. Coach Darren Abel said the victory was largely due to the lack of mental discipline shown by the Hounds, who were hit with one penalty after another during the game. "Penalties just killed them," said Abel, adding that he had to warn his players to turn the other cheek if provoked. The Eagles scored their first touchdown in the first quarter off a five-yard run from Mike Bell, still injured from the last game against the Usher Unicorns a week ago. Weyburn then failed to make a one-point conversion, but brought the score to 7-0 in the second quarter when Mike Lang, also injured last week, kicked an amazing 63-yard punt into the Hounds' end zone. At half-time, the Eagles were brought over to participate in a dedication ceremony for Eagles' former coach Darold Kot, who coach the football program at the school for 30 full years before his retirement in 1962. Once the ceremony was concluded, Kot, who had coached some of the fathers of the current Eagles team, said he liked to remember one particular game he played against Notre Dame which ended 59-0 for Weyburn. "Enough about me," said Kot, just before leaving the field. "We still have 52 points to score in the second half." While they were unable to create such a titanic lead over the Hounds, Weyburn managed to prevent Notre Dame from advancing any further. They finished the game off with another touchdown in the last minute and a half of the fourth quarter, scored again by Mike Bell off a 30-yard run. Rocky Stewart then converted for a final point against the Hounds, leaving the score at 14-0. Abel said while their passing game was weak, the lack of discipline was the only thing that kept the Hounds from taking the game, as the Eagles put in a much poorer performance than the game against Usher. "There's a let-down there," he said. Abel said he didn't know why the Eagles' performance was weak this time around, except they were perhaps over-confident when going against Notre Dame. If so, it does not bode well for the Eagles' match against the Luther Lions this Saturday. This is another crucial game towards a playoff sport, said Abel, and a tough one; while the Lions currently stand at 0-4, they still have a pretty decent defence and some key offensive players. The Eagles, meanwhile, still have injuries to several of their key players. The game against the Lions will be played at Taylor Field at 1 p.m. |
