Both the boys and girls volleyball teams at Weyburn Junior High were sporting gold after they won their respective tournaments over the weekend. The Girls Volleyball team went to their first tournament in Yorkton last weekend. At the end of the round robin they had 12 wins and no losses, taking them to playoffs. They were once again victorious in the playoffs earning themselves gold medals. Coach Dean Leach was very impressed with the girls' performance, commenting, "We have a young team with very little experience, but they proved this weekend that they have a lot of potential." The team was led by impressive set ups by the setter Kaley Mahaffey and powerful playing on the net in the middle by Karly Johnson and Kaila Weimer. Shelease Haupstein, Jaelyn Greening, Britt Pegg and Raeanne Leffler showed moments of brilliance at the power position. Despite Katie Unraw's knee injury, she played steadily especially defensively. "There are several newcomers to the team, and each added to the team's success. Jaynel Mann played well in back row, and Megan Onstad showed great potential as a middle hitter. Ashley Betker set the ball well once she caught on to the rotations, and Anna Semen and Nadine Adderley took care of their positions more than adequately during their time on the floor." said Leach. The Junior Boys were also away last weekend in Balgonie and were competing in Lumsden the weekend before that. The boys placed first in Lumsden and also first in Balgonie. At the end of the eight-team round-robin in Balgonie the boys were in third place. They went on to beat Balgonie in the semi-final, and advanced on to the finals against White city in which they emerged victorious. The boys coach Dara Cunningham is also very excited about her team this year, "(The boys) are doing just wonderful and I am looking forward to the year." |
