The question the staff of Weyburn and Area Supportive Employment Services (WASES) receive the most when people see their Wall of Fame is, "All these people went through your program?" The Wall of Fame is in fact several walls throughout the WASES office, all covered in autographed photos from various celebrities. The pictures range in both notoriety and profession; pictures include noted actors such as Anthony Hopkins and Minnie Driver, singers like Rita MacNeil and the band See Spot Run, and noted scientists like Stephen Hawkins. There are also Nobel Prize winners, authors, athletes and politicians, such as Prime Minister Jean Chretien. There are a total of 250 different pictures on the wall, said WASES executive director Neil Belanger. "It's certainly an oddity for this town," he said. Belanger said the Wall of Fame began as a discussion several months ago on different ways to motive the organization's clients. The wall was tossed around as one of those idea because it shows an entire array of people that did not simply become successful, but were forced to work hard to reach their accomplishments. After deciding to run with the idea, staff then wrote about several hundred letters and e-mails to a list of celebrities. Originally, they were hoping for 50 pictures, said Belanger, but the responses came streaming in, to the point of receiving about seven letters and pictures a week. In addition to the pictures, many respondents sent along letters or even gifts: Christopher Reeve sent along a copy of his book "Still Me," as did magicians Siegfried and Roy, along with a poster. Belanger said the Wall of Fame is not intended only to showcase celebrities, but anyone who has strived to make noted accomplishments. For that reason, there are even some noted or even questionable pictures on the wall, such as the one belonging to Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt. "We don't necessarily agree with what he does," noted Belanger. Most pictures are simply signed, but a few contain personalized messages, such as the picture from Canadian actor Rick Moranis. Belanger said the staff have tried to put as much Canadian content on the wall as possible: for that reason, there are photos from Lt.-Gov. Lynda Haverstock, author Margaret Atwood, Jeopardy host Alex Trebek, and, Belanger's personal favourite, actor William Shatner. There are even some pictures with Weyburn connections, such as producer Troy Skog and actor Conrad Bain, who said in a letter he once lived near Souris School. Belanger said a number of people on the list have not yet responded, so there may be some pictures to come in. But with the office hallway and one other wall already covered in photos, Belanger said it may create a problem. "If they keep coming in, we're going to need a bigger office," he said. |
