The South Central Health District (SCHD) is hoping to reel in some cash for the Tatagwa View long-term care facility with a fishing derby on Saturday, Oct. 13. Registrations for the event will be taken up until the day of the First Annual Tatagwa View Fishing Derby, which takes place on Nickle Lake and the Souris River. Participants may either enter the junior class, which is for participants 17 years and under, or the adult class, which is for participants 18 years and over. Registration costs $10 for juniors and $25 for adults. The derby will start at 7 a.m. and continue to 4 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., all derby contestants must weigh in their fish in one of the three categories of perch, pickerel and northern pike. First prize in the adult class is $100, while first prize in the junior class is $50. Lloyd Searcy, VP of Operations, said a number of sponsors have already signed up for the event, and have supplied most of the prizes for the event. All proceeds from the event go to the Tatagwa View building fund. Searcy said the district needs to hold a number of events like this to raise money for Tatagwa View, since about $1.5 million is needed from the local community in order to build it Following the weigh-in, both derby participants and the general public are invited to a fish fry in River Park at 5 p.m., using the fish caught in the contest. The contest's registration fee also includes the fish fry, but for everyone else not in the contest, a fish dinner costs $8 per person or $20 for a family of four people. Regular hamburgers and hot dogs will be on hand as well. The $17.5 million Tatagwa View facility is intended to provide 135 beds for long-term care patients. Of that $17.5 million, the government has provided about $11.5 million, as well as much of the equipment costs; the rest of the money must come from the SCHD and the community. |
