The Southeast Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society held its 16th annual meeting on October 28 in Oxbow. There were 22 members of the Cancer Society in attendance. The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is broken down into 10 provincial divisions. These units are broken down to 10 units in the province, with the Southeast Unit based in Weyburn. When the meeting began, Ale Wilson, the Gift Planning Coordinator of the Saskatchewan Division of the Canadian Cancer Society, announced that a gentleman from Glenside has left an estate in which the Canadian Cancer Society will receive over $2 million. Delores Herring was the guest speaker at the meeting in which she spoke of what happens in the Southeast District. She announced in her speech that one of the researchers involved with the CCS is Dr. Lynn Kirkpatrick, who was born in Swift Current and raised in Weyburn. She was the first-ever University of Regina researcher/chemist to receive an National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) grant. Herring also announced the up and coming fund-raisers for the year. In March the society will hold Daffodil Days, in which bundles of daffodils are sold to raise money. In April the CCS will be doing door-to-door canvassing. The CCS in memoriam program, in which donations are given in memory of someone who has passed away, will be ongoing through out the year. In June the unit will be holding the Relay for Life which has participants running around a track for 12 hours followed by a luminary ceremony. The Southeast Unit will be holding its one of a kind Country Music Jamboree at Nickle Lake, in which musicians donate their time and money to perform in June. The Cops for Cancer head shave and other fund-raisers will also be taking place around that time. In October the unit will be hosting the Ladies Night Out which raises money for breast cancer. The Southeast Unit announced its goal for the near future is to increase the society's visibility in communities that do not have a unit office. The society is developing a kiosk-style display that provides information about core programs in the unit, as well as the telephone hot line and options for making donations. |
