Police investigate Halloween vandalism, weekend break-in

The Weyburn Police Service are investigating a series of vandalism and thefts that took place Halloween night in downtown Weyburn, along with a break-in over the weekend.

Three businesses on Third Street downtown had their front plate glass windows smashed in the early morning hours Thursday, including Hoium's MVP Sports, Price Rite Drugs and Movies Galore.

Vandals broke out both sides of Hoium's front windows, said owner-manager Loni Hoium, with one side totally demolished. In addition, some clothing, jerseys and hats in a front window display were stolen, he said, although they did not enter the store itself. Some items were left in the window display, like hockey equipment.

The business was back in full operation Thursday after the damaged areas were boarded up, and the glass was fully replaced by Saturday, said Hoium, who put the estimate of damage at over $2,000.

Two front windows were smashed out at Price Rite Drugs and at Movies Galore next door, but nothing was taken from either store, said owner-manager Rob Jones, who put the damage around $3,000.

In addition to these incidents, police are also investigating a break-in to the Superbowl bowling alley late Saturday or early Sunday morning, and an attempted break-in to the King George Hotel.

Police said some items were taken from the bowling alley, but declined to say what those items were, as they are still investigating the crime.
