Good weekend for Weyburn

Red Wings notch win and tie in pair of games

By KEVIN BERGER of Weyburn Review

The Weyburn Red Wings came out of the Remembrance Day holiday weekend without suffering a loss in a pair of games with the Melville Millionaires on Friday and Saturday, one of the first such weekends for the Red Wings this season.

The home game on Friday ended in a triumphant 4-0 win, while Saturday's match ended in a 3-3 tie.

The injury bug has been a major obstacle in the Red Wings' path so far this season. In an interview on Friday evening, however, coach Dwight McMillan sounded positive about the team, saying, "We're getting some healthy guys back in the line-up."

This has made a lot of difference, said McMillan, because the Wings are learning to pass the puck and play off of each other.

There are still a few obstacles to contend with, however. Left-winger Steve Seghers was suspended on Friday for 10 games, for a checking incident with Notre Dame on Nov. 5, and goaltender Nathan Deobald has been out with an intestinal condition.

Deobald, who was traded recently from the Humboldt Broncos, returned to the ice on Sunday, but filling in for him has been Vaughn Watson. Watson, also a recent trade, is playing with a Junior B team in Assiniboia, but has done well for the goaltender he has been suited up for, said McMillan.

The Wings also have to contend with the loss of Brett Burns, who broke his leg in the game with Notre Dame on Nov. 5. McMillan said the loss of Burns will hurt them, as he was both an experienced and strong player.

The Wings' game on Friday began with a power play goal in the first by Mike LeBlanc, with assists going to Greg Park and Matt Bothwell.

Things began getting rough in the second, as Weyburn scored twice to secure a 3-0 lead. Goals came from Denis Bilodeau, assisted by Lee Gusikoski and Brett Bartel, and Mike LeBlanc, assisted by Bothwell and Nathan Ward.

The third period turned into a series of fights, as Melville seemed to grow anxious to get back at the Wings for their considerable deficit. Lee Gusikoski scored the Red Wings' fourth and final goal, with assists going to Bilodeau and Curtis Corbett.

The game on Saturday in Melville began much like Friday's game, as Weyburn gained an early 2-0 lead. Goals were scored by Bilodeau on a power play and Brett Cross, with assists going to Ward, Preston Briggs and Reagan Rome.

The second period saw the Red Wings increase their lead to 3-0, after Bilodeau scored a power play goal off of Park and Bothwell.

But the Red Wings fell apart in the third period, letting in one power play and two regular goals within the space of only three minutes. The score remained at 3-3 until the end of the game, and neither team was able to secure a goal in overtime.

McMillan said it has been a great boost to the Wings to win two home games in a row. But they now have to find the confidence needed to win a game away from the Colosseum, which they have been unable to do this season.

"We've got to get that confidence to play away," he said.

The Wings take to the road this week for a pair of games against the Flin Flon Bombers on Friday, Nov. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 17. They will also go to Humboldt to play the Broncos again on Sunday, Nov. 18.
