Quonset fire caused by electrical short

The cause of a fire which destroyed a quonset hut on a farm west of Weyburn has been pinpointed as electrical, said Fire Chief Denis Pilon.

The fire department found the fire fully underway when they arrived at Gordon Hemphill's farm eight miles west of Weyburn on Nov. 8, and the building was destroyed along with a truck, tractor and tools inside the building.

Initially Chief Pilon had indicated a wood-burning stove may have started the fire, but after investigation, the cause was found to be an electrical short in a piece of equipment. Hemphill had been working in the quonset and left, and when he returned he found the building was on fire and turned in the fire call to the Weyburn Fire Department.

The loss of the quonset and contents was put at about $60,000, said the fire chief.

A benefit social and dance was held for Hemphill on Friday night at the Elks Hall to help offset his loss.
