The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn have begun organizing to bring the world-famous Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride to Weyburn next September. It's been more than four years since the police troops have brought their musical entourage to the city. "The RCMP approached us about bringing the Musical Ride here," says Young Fellows member Scott Paxman. "We're excited to be the group to host this great event. We're still in the organizational stages right now, but we're eager to get the word out." The RCMP Musical Ride was founded in Regina in 1887 and has been on public display since 1901. The Ride tours throughout Canada as well as international venues, performing at approximately 40 to 50 locations a year between the months of May and October. One of the more familiar formations Weyburn residents can expect to see the Ride perform is the "Dome" manoeuvre, which was once featured on the back of the Canadian $50 bill. Members of the Musical Ride are first and foremost police officers who, after at least two years of active police work, volunteer for duty with the touring group. Most of the members are not riders, but once they complete an equestrian training course, are riders and ambassadors of goodwill. The RCMP Musical Ride is scheduled to be in Weyburn on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2002. |
