Weyburn's Soo Line Boxing Club is hosting a major boxing card at their gym located in the basement of Souris Valley Extended Care Centre on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m. Competing in the card will be clubs from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and North Dakota. The main event of the evening will feature middleweight boxer Michael Walchuk from Regina versus Dale Cunny from Brandon, Man. Walchuk, is the Saskatchewan middleweight champion and silver medalist from the 2000 Nationals, weighing in at 165 pounds. Walchuk had considerable previous experience in Ontario before moving to Regina. Cunny is the Manitoba middleweight champ who gained previous experience in South Dakota before going to Brandon. The semi-main event will feature Weyburn's own Chad Olson at 156 pounds versus the light middleweight Saskatchewan champ Moses Alli. Alli has had considerable experience in South Africa before coming to Regina. He is known for hard hits that come often. Olson has had 27 bouts of experience and competed at the Junior Nationals when he was 16, winning himself a silver medal. He also competed at the Canada Winter Games in Newfoundland when he was 18. According to Soo Line's head coach Hank Hartenberger, this bout alone should be worth the price of admission, as Olson is very confident going into this match. Another Weyburn fighter who will appear on the card is Will Orr, a strong hard-hitting light heavyweight fighter who weighs in at 175 pounds. Hartenberger advises spectators to also watch for a knockout in local middleweight fighter Ashley Herberholz's fight. This 165-pound boxer is known for aggressive hard punches. Fast hard hits are expected from Dean Hodgkins. Hodgkins is a 147-pound welterweight boxer competing in the card. Josh Norman, a 139-pound light welterweight, is another Weyburn boxer who is showing a lot of promise for the upcoming year. The local Sask. Junior Champ, Joel Franks will be fighting the Alberta champ from Calgary, and Evan Nyhus, another Sask. Junior Champ will also be competing against the Alberta champ from Calgary. Both Franks and Nyhus competed at the Canadian National Juniors in St. Catharines, Ont., last year. Ryan Nakenechny and Atley Roettger, both Weyburn juniors weighing in at 127 pounds, will also be competing. There will be additional bouts planned, depending on the weights of the boxers coming from North Dakota. |
