Weyburn boxer Chad Olson is hoping the injury that doctors said would end his boxing career doesn't return anytime soon. Olson is gearing up for his comeback in a major boxing card from the Soo Line Boxing Club in Weyburn this weekend. After nearly three years away from the boxing circuit for surgery to his hand, and some personal time off to raise a family, Olson is feeling good about his return match with Saskatchewan light-middleweight champion Moses Alli on Saturday night. "We'll see if I can't make something out of this," said Olson on his comeback to the ring. "I messed up my hand and had to have surgery. It's been a hard battle to get back in, but I've made it through and I'm ready. I feel strong and I feel like I'm going to succeed with what I'm doing." Success is not something new to Olson. When he injured his hand, doctors questioned whether the young boxer would be able to hit anything ever again, and so far Olson's gone against the odds and proven them wrong. In the past, he's had 27 bouts of experience under his belt and won a silver medal at the Junior Nationals when he was just 16. He also competed at the Canada Winter Games in Newfoundland two years later. "My brother actually got me into boxing, and ever since I've been working really hard at it," Olson noted. "Boxing is like being in a one-man team - it's up to you to win or lose. You don't have to worry about someone else losing the game for you." Olson will need to put his money where his mouth is when he takes on Alli. The return match is being billed as a co-main event for the first Weyburn boxing event in recent years. The other main event will feature Saskatchewan middleweight champion Michael Walchuck from Regina, and Manitoba middleweight champion Dale Cunny from Brandon. "Knowing that I'm one of the prize fighters of the club makes me feel really good," Olson said. "I'm not as strong as I used to be and I lost a lot of weight over the past two years, but I'm battling through it and I feel good about the fight." Other key matches include local Saskatchewan junior champions Joel Franks and Evan Nyhus in matches with their Alberta championship counterparts. Last year, both Franks and Nyhus competed at the Canadian National Junior tournament in St. Catharines, Ont. Other Weyburn boxers on the card include Will Orr, Ashley Herberholz, Dean Hodgkins, Josh Norman, Ryan Nakenechney and Atley Roettger. "This is the first card in Weyburn in two or three years," Olson said. "It's a big tournament and it should be a lot of fun for the fighters and the audience." The Weyburn Soo Line Boxing Club event will take place at the gym in the basement of Souris Valley Extended Care Centre on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Competing in the tournament are clubs from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and North Dakota. "You've got to be a strong-minded person to be a boxer," Olson said. "You have to be determined and you have to sacrifice a few things. But in the end, it's all worth it." |
