Comp girls b'ball team scores three wins at home tourney

To be fair, all of the opponents faced this weekend by the Weyburn Comp Eagles girls' basketball team were in their early season, and there were still a lot of mistakes being made on all sides.

On the other hand, the Eagles put in their most consistent performance of the season so far at the home tournament they hosted Friday and Saturday, as they scored three consecutive victories against Notre Dame, Wynyard and Moose Jaw Central.

"Anybody who wasn't there missed some great entertainment," said coach Gary Frederickson.

The home tournament began Friday evening with a match between Weyburn and Notre Dame. Strong play gave the girls their first win, as they defeated Notre Dame 49-40.

Weyburn then played Wynyard on Saturday at noon. The Eagles were even stronger in this match, defeating Wynyard 59-35.

Getting a break in the afternoon, Weyburn then matched up with Moose Jaw Central.

Moose Jaw proved to be the strongest of all three opponents, leaving Weyburn behind by eight points at the end of the first half. But the Eagles were able to make a comeback in the second half, and captured a narrow 58-56 victory.

The Eagles' success at this tournament comes off a lacklustre performance the previous weekend in Lethbridge, Alta. Frederickson attributes the victory to a good week of practice and strong performances from several players, including guard Jody Anderson, Tonya Mokelki and Megan Leach.

"Everybody played well," said Frederickson.

The Eagles were also strengthened by the return of several players who were unavailable in Lethbridge, including Molkelki.

Frederickson said the goal now is to work on being more consistent in play.

Their next tournament will not be until the first week of January, as school breaks for Christmas vacation on Friday, Dec. 21.
Jr. Eagles are 2-1 in Oungre

The Comp Jr. Eagles girls' basketball team also did well this weekend, capturing two close victories at a tournament in Torquay on Saturday.

Coach Wanda Pegg said the girls got off to a "horrible" start, losing 31-17 in their first match against Gladmar. They had trouble with outside shooting and boarding; the girls shot only six per cent for the entirety of the match.

"I think my grandma shoots better," said Pegg.

The Jr. Eagles returned to the competition with a match against Oungre-Lyndale; this game was considerably better and very exciting, said Pegg.

Guards Cortney Sordahl and Abby Manko both contributed to the game by scoring four points each; at the end of the match, the Jr. Eagles were up 29-28 over their opponents.

The final game against Estevan proved to be no different, as both teams put out a strong solid game and began racking up points on each other. "Again, another barnburner," said Pegg.

Taking the lead on the court was Kirsten Betker, who scored 12 points throughout the game. Weyburn was able to edge out Estevan 51-50, though it would have gone into overtime but for a failed shot by Estevan.

The Jr. Eagles next play a quick game at the Weyburn Junior High on Thursday, Dec. 20. The game will be played at WJH after school.

They will then break for the season before resuming with a tournament on the Jan. 11-12 weekend in the new year.
