Weyburn broke two records in December, one for the coldest temperature on record and one for the warmest. Statistics gathered by the city's weather station at the water filtration plant show that on Dec. 4, the city was one degree colder, at -32, than the previously coldest day on record. On Dec. 4 in 1972, the city hit the -31 mark. On Dec. 11, the city also broke the record for the warmest temperature, at 5.5 degrees. The previous record for Dec. 11 was set in 1980, at 4.5 degrees. All temperatures are in Celsius. That 5.5 degree temperature, however, was not the warmest day in December. On Dec. 10, the temperature soared to 7.5 degrees. Even that did not set a record for that day, since the highest temperature recorded Dec. 10 was 9.0 set in 1987. The last month of the year is not usually so warm, even for a day or so. Records show for the past 10 years, from 1992, the average high temperature in December is -5.9 degrees. The -32 recording-breaking day for cold, on Dec. 4, was the also lowest the thermometer dropped during the whole month. The average cold temperature in December, for the past 10 years, is a relatively balmy -16.1 degrees. In 2000, for instance, the average warm temperature was only -12.9 degrees. The mean maximum temperature in December was -2.9 degrees, while the long-term running average for maximum temperatures in December, from 1952-53 to now, was -6.6 degrees. The mean minimum temperature in December was -11.1, while the long-term running average for December, from 1952-53 to now, was -16.6 degrees. The overall mean temperature in December was -7 degrees. Total water precipitation in December was 25 mm, compared to the long-term running average for December of 18.3 mm. The highest precipitation in December in the last 10 years was 37.8 mm in 1996. The lowest was 1.4 mm in 1997. The average precipitation in December in the last 10 years was 20.3 mm. |
