The Weyburn Inn Devils were on the receiving end of a third-period comeback by the Moosomin Rangers at the Colosseum Sunday night, which marked their first tie of the season with a final score of 4-4. The match with Moosomin was the Devils' only game this week, due to a cancellation by Wawota on Friday because of icy road conditions. At first, it looked like the Devils were going to take another victory from Moosomin, since they were up 4-1 by the middle of the second period; Willy Mason had been top scorer for the Devils with a natural hat trick, while Boyd Forseth scored their fourth goal. Three assists were credited to Clint Fladeland, while Corey Koski, Forseth, Aaron Grohn, Craig Rodine and Lance Wakefield each had a single assist. That lead of the Devils disappeared, however, midway through the second period. Devils' coach Norm Cross said the Devils lost their momentum when they took a couple of penalties that they had to kill off. Added to that was the ejection of player Boyd Dennis from the game for three stick infractions, which forced the Devils to regroup. "It kind of ruined the flow of the game," said Cross. From there on, the Rangers took advantage of the Devils' stumble and scored three more times, once in the second period and twice in the third. Tied 4-4, neither team was able to score in overtime. Although the Devils had their chances to score, said Cross, they were unable to regain their momentum and slip past Moosomin goalie Ryan Potter, who was already very strong in net to begin with. "We had some chances, but we couldn't score on them," he said. With the Devils' season now more than half over, Cross admits that Moosomin, the only team to hand Weyburn a loss this season, are likely to be their rivals come playoff time, along with Carlyle. "I think it's going to be tooth and nail all year," he said. The Wawota game has not yet been rescheduled. This weekend, the Devils will go on the road for a game with the Arcola-Kisbey Combines on Friday, Jan. 10, before returning home to the Colosseum for a match with the Carlyle Cougars on Sunday, Jan. 12. The game starts at 8 p.m. |
