Six local karate students given championship titles

Six members of Vilcu's Karate Club have been awarded 14 Continental Open Martial Arts Association (COMAA) Championship Titles for 2002.

COMAA is an independent rating body with no particular affiliation to any style or system, representing about 20 clubs in western Canada and the northern U.S. Tae kwon do, karate, jujitsu and kung fu clubs compete regularly at tournaments.

For a person to be named a COMAA Champion, they must be ranked No. 1 in their divisions; this certificate does not mean the student is simply the best in their particular style of karate, it indicates they are the best overall in all styles of martial arts.

In the 14-17 year junior black belt category, Claudette Vilcu was champion in female sparring and Brett Vilcu was champion in male sparring and weapon sparring.

John McNab had four certificates, being named champion in forms for the 18 and over blue-brown belt division, in forms for the 35 years and over white and brown division, and in forms and sparring for the 45 years and over white and brown belt division.

Richard McNab was champion in forms for the 10-11 year orange and green belt division.

Angela Szeponski was champion in forms and sparring for the 18 and over women's white and yellow belt division.

Sarah Acton was champion in sparring for the 12-13 year orange and green belt division.
