Arts Centre society seeks funding for feasibility study

Members of the Weyburn Performing Arts Centre Society are continuing to search out sources of funding for a feasibility study following a funding setback last year.

The organization is seeking to establish a new performing arts centre in Weyburn, and would like to submit an application for a capital grant to the federal Department of Canadian Heritage, part of which requires a feasibility study to be completed on the proposed centre.

The society was able to come up with $17,000 in funding, which includes $10,000 from the City of Weyburn, $5,000 from the society, $1,000 from the Public school board, and $500 each from the Separate and Central school boards.

They were in line for a matching grant through the Southeast Regional Economic Development Authority (SEREDA), but after going through all of the requirements the funding was pulled by the provincial government, as it was for all REDAs in the province.

Society president Dave Craigen said the federal Heritage grant is still a possibility, but the application process is quite detailed and extensive, which is why the society wants to get the feasibility study completed. The study is estimated to cost between $28,000 and $30,000.

Undaunted, the Weyburn group is still looking for federal or provincial matching funding to help make the feasibility study go ahead. In the city's budget deliberations, the $10,000 set aside for the study in last year's budget still remained, so it has been left as a payable item.
