Red Wings gain crucial win against N.D. Hounds

Coming off a failed three-game road trip, the Red Wings were in bad need of a victory on Wednesday night against Notre Dame.

And they got it.

"(It was) very key," said Wings coach Dwight McMillan, referring to Weyburn's 3-1 defeat of the Hounds. "We needed that win in the worst way."

Playing the Hounds on their home turf in Wilcox, the Wings were trailing their opponents going into the second period by one goal. Weyburn's scoring drought was finally broken that period at 18:37, when Tyler Mills scored on the power play off assists by Greg Park and Clayton Bastura.

The Wings then clinched the victory with two goals in the third, first from Jarod Eagles off an assist by Lee Gusikoski and second from Shayne Emmons, assisted by Andrew Katzberg.

Weyburn's victory was in great part due to Cale Jordison, who stopped 41 out of 42 shots against their net.

With the win, Weyburn has managed to retain their hold on second place in the Sherwood Conference. Yorkton was only able to add a single point to their ranking this weekend, when they lost 4-3 in overtime to the Kindersley Klippers.

That leaves Weyburn two points ahead of Yorkton for second place, with both sides having an equal number of games. This adds up to one very crucial match-up between Weyburn and Yorkton on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the Colosseum.

McMillan said the Wings need to win their next couple of games, but especially the match with Yorkton.

"If we can beat them, that pushes them farther down," he said.

Results from that game are not available due to publication deadlines.

Pearce added to All-Stars

Red Wings defenceman Steve Pearce has been added to the Sherwood Conference All-Star team in the place of Yorkton Terrier Jason Beatty, who is scheduled for arthroscopic knee surgery prior to the All-Star event.

Pearce has played in 44 games this season, with four goals and 15 assists. He is the fifth Red Wing to be added to the All-Star roster.

The SJHL/MJHL All-Star Weekend takes place in Flin Flon and the Pas, Man., on Friday to Sunday, Jan. 31-Feb. 2.
