In an all-Weyburn A final, the Weyburn Best Value Rockets defeated the Weyburn Canadians 5-1 to win the Bantam division championship of the Weyburn Female Hockey Classic this weekend. Sixteen teams at the Bantam and Peewee levels competed in the Hockey Classic, which was held Saturday and Sunday at the Sports Arena and Colosseum. The Best Value Rockets reached the A final by soundly beating the Regina Hawks 8-2 and then crushing the Moose Jaw 7-2 in Saturday's semi-final. Their opponents, the Weyburn Canadians, had two shutouts over Fort Qu'Appelle (6-0) and the Regina Royals (3-0) before entering the finals. The game between the Rockets and Canadians was close until late in the third period, when the Rockets broke ahead. The third Weyburn team in the tournament, the Peewee Youngfellow Rockets, also had an excellent weekend in capturing the C side championship. They won their first game against the Regina Royals 3-0, but were sent to the C side after losing to the Regina Predators 8-3. They then defeated the Regina Cougars 4-1 to win the championship. This tournament welcomed appearances by Wally Kozak, head scout and assistant coach for the Canadian women's' Olympic gold hockey team, and Walter Gretzky, father of the "Great One," Wayne Gretzky. They talked to all three Weyburn teams before their games on Saturday and took part in two ceremonial puck drops. Kozak handed out autographed pictures of hockey player Cassie Campbell, presented each girl with a Team Canada program and passed around Colleen Sostoric's gold medal. Gretzky, meanwhile, signed autographs and amused the girls with his down-to-earth humour. |
