Weyburn wrestlers take 25 medals from Swift Current

Members of the Weyburn Wrestling Club took home a stack of 25 medals from a major wrestling tournament on Saturday in Swift Current.

There were a total of 36 wrestlers from Weyburn amongst the 210 competitors at Swift Current.

In the Grade 1-2 freshie class, Dustin Wagner won gold while Zachary Olmstead and Justin Chuckry won bronze.

In the Grade 3-4 novice class, Reed Ivan and Ethan Martel won silver and bronze medals respectively. Also competing were Nathan Regnier, Kevin Franklin and Mitchell Folk.

In the Grade 5-6 peewee class, Cortney Johnson and A.J. Semen both won silver. Also competing were Brendan Haupstein, Colby Bill, Lewis Cowie, Colby Paul and Brett Penny.

In the Grade 7-8 bantam class, Jade Ivan won gold, Anna Semen won second, Davin Kwochka won bronze, J.T. Phillips won silver, and Anthony Thompson and Kris Grohn each had bronze. Also competing were Brandy Walker, Travis Sonnenberg and Jeff Lunde.

Every wrestler competing in the Grade 9-10 cadet class took home a medal. Kaley Mahaffey won third, Jared Loos won first, Mike Fenwick won first, Jared Nimegeers won third, Andy Hodgson won first, Dustin Nimegeers won third, Matt Walker won second, Brett Semen won first, Atley Roettger won third, Cody Herberholz was third and Jared Wagner took second.

This was the second competition entered this month by the Weyburn Wrestling Club. Seven local wrestlers also entered a contest in Prince Albert on Jan. 11, and each brought home a medal.

Brian Lunde, Mike Fenwick, Andy Hodgson and Kaley Mahaffey all won gold, while Brett Semen and Jared Wagner won silver. Jade Ivan won the only bronze.

The Wrestling Club started up this fall, taking over the wrestling program at the Weyburn Junior High. Coach Kevin Butz has been so far pleased with the results.

"We get better and better every week," said Butz, adding the improvements can really be seen amongst the younger wrestlers, and the older competitors are as good as anyone in the province.

Butz said the team is really looking forward to provincials, which will be held in Regina on March 8 and March 23 for the different classes. There is also the possibility of sending local wrestlers to the nationals as members of team Saskatchewan.

None of this would be possible without the support of the parents, said Butz, adding a lot of families turned out for the big tournament in Swift Current.

The next event for the Weyburn Wrestling Club will be in Pangman on Saturday, Feb. 8. A week later, they are in Saskatoon, as well as on Saturday, March 1.
