The Weyburn Junior High Cobra girls' basketball team "three-peated" their winning ways this weekend as they won their third straight tournament, this time in Yorkton. The Cobras blew through their first two games, defeating Melville 57-7 and White City 54-8. They won the championship by defeating the hometown team Yorkton 35-16. Since a tournament at Moose Jaw in mid-January, the WJH Cobra girls have yet to be defeated in a single game in their past three tournaments. The Cobras stay at home this weekend to co-host the Weyburn Junior Basketball Classic with St. Michael School. St. Michael girls coach Dean Klein said his team is looking forward to the tournament and especially squaring off against Weyburn Junior High. "I think anytime you have the two junior highs in town here going against one another they want to compete you always like to beat your friend," said Klein. Klein is going to depend on his team's defensive skills and their press to make it to the finals. There will be a total of six Weyburn teams in the event, with all four A and B teams from the Junior High and two teams from St. Mike's. Boy's coach Roman Mahnic is looking forward to the tournament as he'll have a full roster of player after several of his players have been down due to illness. "It's going to be a good one, a real barn burner," said Mahnic. "I would have to say it's probably the most evenly competitive tournament I've seen here." The girls' draw will be played in a round-robin format. It begins on Friday, Feb. 7, with a game between Assiniboia and St. Michael School on the latter's home court, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Cobras B team then plays Yorkton at 7 p.m. at the WJH, followed by St. Mike's playing the WJH at 8:30 p.m. The action on Saturday, Feb. 8, starts with a game between Yorkton and Melfort at 8:30 a.m., and continues with the WJH A and B teams hosting Assiniboia and Melfort at 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. The semi-finals are at 2:15 and 3:30 p.m. at St. Mike's and WJH respectively, and the finals are at 6:15 p.m. at the WJH. The boys' draw will feature eight teams. The first four games on Friday are as follows: the WJH hosts Balgonie and Lumsden at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively, Fillmore plays White City at St. Mikes at 7 p.m., and St. Mike's hosts St. Henry's at 8:30 p.m. Games continue throughout the day on Saturday, ending with the finals at the Weyburn Junior High at 7:30 p.m. |
