Weyburn Inn Devils enter playoffs at top of Big Six

It's good to be back on top.

The Weyburn Inn Devils finished their regular season this weekend by retaking the coveted first place crown of the Big Six League.

A bad road trip back in January had dropped Weyburn behind the Moosomin Rangers into second place in the Big Six, after the Devils had retained their grip on first place since nearly the start of the season.

However, victories in their last three games managed to pull Weyburn into the coveted top spot, which will give them a bye in the first round of Big Six playoffs.

The Devils first defeated the Wawota Flyers 7-2 on Wednesday. Clint Fladeland was on fire in the first two periods for Weyburn, as he scored a natural hat trick to bring the Devils a 3-2 lead.

Chad Bailey raised the stakes later that period, and would contribute another goal in the third. Jerid Corbett and Aaron Grohn scored Weyburn's fifth and seventh goals respectively.

The Flyers also gave Weyburn their second victory, hosting the Devils in Wawota on Friday.

The game turned out to be an 11-5 blowout in the Devils' favour. Fladeland scored another hat trick against Wawota, while Corey Koski and Brent Kosior had two goals each.

Contributing the remainder of Weyburn's four goals were Corey Koski, Bailey, Denny Joyal and Don Sauter.

The Devils' final game of the 2002-2003 season was against Carnduff at the Colosseum on Sunday, which ended 7-3 in Weyburn's favour.

Boyd Dennis scored a whopping four goals for the Devils against Carnduff, while Sauter, Joyal and Grohn each had singles.

Chad Bailey was credited with three assists that game, while Koski and Sauter each contributed two assists. Craig Rodine had one.

Although they won't be taking part in the first round of Big Six playoffs, the Devils are still competing in the second round of Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) provincial series against the Avonlea Arrows.

Game 1 was held last night, Feb. 11, in Avonlea, but results are not available due to publication deadlines; the second game will be held Sunday in Weyburn.
