A Weyburn mixed curling team has qualified for the provincial finals in North Battleford beginning on Wednesday, March 12. The Warren Betker rink will be one of 16 teams taking part in the competition that will see men and women from across the province take to the ice. "We could go there and lose three straight, then again we could go there and I think we could win it," said Betker. He expects to see some good competition in North Battleford, saying sometimes a team just has to get on a hot streak to do well. Betker's rink won the spot in North Battleford over the Feb. 21 weekend at a bonspiel in Milestone. "There weren't a lot of teams there, only six, but there was some high quality play there and we had to play well to win," said Betker. The rink won its first three games, lost one and then won its final game beating the Monte Marshall rink, also from Weyburn. Betker's rink is made up of Warren Betker (skip), Leah Bernie (third), Randy Geisler (second), and Marnie Johnson (lead). Marnie Johnson was a last-minute addition to the team as the rink's original lead fell and broke her wrist and was unable to compete. Prior to the mixed curling finals, curling fans will have the opportunity to watch curlers take part in two separate bonspiels over the next two weeks. Beginning Friday, Feb. 28 and ending March 2, the Weyburn Curling Club will host the Men's Bonspiel beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday. A total of 32 teams will compete in the spiel, and currently all the spots are full for the tournament. The following week, beginning on Friday, March 7 to Sunday, March 9, the club will host the Ladies' Bonspiel. There is room for four more rinks in the spiel with a $120 entry fee for each team. Any rinks interested in taking part in the Ladies' Bonspiel should contact the curling club. |
