The Weyburn Peewee Youngfellows managed to guarantee second place in the league with a pair of outstanding wins over the Melville Millionaires on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's contest ended in a 10-0 total victory for the Youngfellows. Goaltender Cam Irwin was credited with the shutout, and made some impressive saves to preserve Melville's goose egg. Jon Neuberger started the rout for Weyburn, as he scored off Nathan Deck and Dylan Spencer at the seven-minute mark of the first. Colton Jensen counted another a minute later off Rolan Anderson and Rhys Thomas. Deck then scored a natural hat trick for the Youngfellows. His first goal was unassisted, but he drew helpers from Braydon Regier on his second and Spencer and Neuberger on his third. The first period ended 6-0 for Weyburn with a final unassisted goal from Thomas. Weyburn added three more goals in the second from Shaun Stroeder, Brock Struthers and Reid Paterson. Assists went to Nick Cugnet and Anderson, twice. With a 9-0 lead, the game was essentially over with in the third period, but Weyburn managed a final goal from Adam Shirkie, scoring unassisted. Sunday's contest was a huge game for Weyburn, since a victory would clinch second place in the league and give them the home ice advantage all the way through the playoffs. Weyburn did take a slight lead in the first with goals from Mike Onstad and Neuberger, assisted by Cugnet and Anderson. Shirkie then started the scoring at the 54-second mark of the second period to make it 3-0, with assists going to Thomas and Neuberger. The Moneymen, however, weren't going to lay down and give Weyburn an easy win. Melville scored two quick goals within 18 seconds of each other to bring the score to 3-2. Deck, assisted by Thomas, and Stroeder, assisted by Deck and Cugnet, brought in two more goals, which Melville responded to with two goals of their own. The score went up 6-5 as Deck scored another unassisted goal, with Melville responding shortly after. Weyburn's final goal came courtesy of Jensen at the 12-minute mark, assisted by Onstad and Deck. The Moneymen scored once more to finalize the score at 7-6. The Youngfellows now turn their attention to the SHA Peewee A Provincials. They travel to Beardy Reserve tonight, Feb. 26, to take on the Wakaw Peewee team in Game 1 of the two-game series for the South semi-finals. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday, March 1, at Milestone at 4:30 p.m. |
