The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn is gearing up for its largest fund-raiser of the year, the April 12 TV auction to be held in McKenna Hall and televised on Access 7 television. Chairman Scott Benning said Monday this is the auction's 46th year. It began with a broadcast over radio in the early years. "It's been around for a long enough time for everyone to know about it. It's quite popular," said Benning. "It starts at 1 p.m. and it's all we can do to get it finished by 9 p.m." Residents can watch the auction from their home and call in their bids or they can come down to the hall. Last year, about 560 items were auctioned. Weyburn businesses donate goods, which means almost anything sold in the city could land on the table. There is quite a variety, said Benning, from lawn and garden equipment to snowblowers, windows and gift certificates for services and goods. Even industrial supplies are sometimes on the list, as used oilfield pipe has been known to appear, said Benning. "Just like any auction there are sometimes some good deals and people like to get in there and save a buck or two." He said the auction is an excellent way for businesses to support the club's involvement in the community. This year the Young Fellows Club has donated dollars to the Agricultural Society's new grandstand, the learn-to-swim program for Grades 3 and 5 students, the Communithon and the Salvation Army. |
