Girls, junior boys host home tournament:

Big victory for Comp Eagles at Swift Current

If this weekend was any indication of how the Small Cities provincial championships will turn out, things are looking up for the Comp Eagles senior boys' basketball team.

The boys tasted tournament victory for the third time this season as they ran the table at a tournament in Swift Current. All the boys played hard and put in a strong team effort to gain the win, made all the more crucial considering most of their opponents were teams slated to compete at Small Cities this year.

"It was a huge victory for the guys," said coach Len Williams.

In fact, winning the tournament will likely mean a first or second place finish in the (Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association) SHSAA standings, to be out later this week, said Williams.

The Eagles opened the tournament Friday afternoon with an impressive 70-34 victory over North Battleford. Brian Loden led the scoring with 24 points, while Jeff May added eight points and Mat Larson had seven points to go along with his 10 rebounds.

Saturday saw a tougher test, as the Eagles went into overtime to beat Yorkton Regional 63-59. Jeff Moser led the way with 17 points, while Brian Loden sank 16 points and May helped the cause with 11 points and nine rebounds.

In the finals, the Weyburn boys were crowned tournament champs as they defeated Prince Albert Carlton 70-43. Brian Loden had 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Jeff Moser had 15 points and Cassidy Neilson had 10 points.

At home, the Comp Eagles senior girls and junior boys basketball team hosted a tournament at the Weyburn Comprehensive School on Friday and Saturday.

The girls were 2-1 out of three games. They barely squeaked by Fillmore 64-63 in their first match on Friday, and then whipped Estevan 60-40 on Saturday afternoon.

Their final game was later that day against Notre Dame, who defeated Weyburn 58-48.

The junior boys, meanwhile, played two games, with their third opponent not showing up at the event. The Eagles defeated Fillmore 73-49 on Friday and Stoughton by 23 points on Saturday.

Both the senior boys and senior girls are home at the Weyburn Comprehensive School this weekend to host their third and final home tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8.

The girls play Wynyard at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, and then Indian Head at 12:15 p.m. and Yorkton at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday.

The boys play Swift Current on Friday at 8 p.m., followed by games versus Yorkton at 1:45 p.m. and Estevan at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Also on Friday are games between Indian Head and Yorkton at 3:30 p.m. and Yorkton and Estevan at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Indian Head plays Wynyard at 9 a.m., Swift Current plays Estevan at 12:15 p.m., Wynyard plays Yorkton at 3:30 p.m. and Yorkton plays Swift Current at 5 p.m.
