Two curling teams from the Weyburn Comprehensive School will be competing in High School provincials on March 6-8, after winning the top spot in their respective categories at district playoffs. The boys' team, which consists of Jason Obst, Matt Hoffman, Brad Wagner, Brad Wallin and Darren Daku, won their shot at provincials by going undefeated at the districts in Redvers on Feb. 24-25. Coach Murray Obst said the team defeated Oxbow and Midale before meeting Carnduff in the A final. Three straight wins pushed them into the B side, where they defeated Redvers and Carnduff once again to win the entire tournament. This win, said Obst, enables them to compete in Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) Provincials in Strasbourg on March 6-8. Were that not enough, the team's second shot at a provincial crown was won this weekend, as the team went undefeated at juvenile playoffs in Kronau. The win enables the team to head to Juvenile 17 and under Provincials in Fort Qu'Appelle on March 14-17. "The guys curled good again," said Obst. Also heading to the SHSAA Provincials in Assiniboia on March 6-8 is the mixed team consisting of skip Brennen Jones, lead Nicole Smith, second Byron Moffatt and third Sarah Nikolejsin. Like the Obst team, the Jones rink won the right to go to provincials at district playoffs on Feb. 24-25 in Carlyle. The team went undefeated in all five of their games, winning both the A and B side of the tournament. Coach Jim Nikolejsin said the team curled very well, and didn't fall into any significant trouble. Two other Comp teams competed at the district playoffs. The girls' team, consisting of skip Michelle Knoblauch, third Melissa Wick, second Charmaine Elmy, lead Justine Stephanson and alternate Niki Rodine, finished fourth out of eight teams in Carlyle. The girls were 2-2 throughout the event, first defeating Leanne Walter of Lampman 12-3. They lost their second game badly, dropping 10-1 to Karly Murray of Carnduff, the top-ranked team in the division. They defeated Tara Keating of Estevan 10-4 in their third game, and lost their final match to a Radville team 8-6. Coach Richard Wick said he was happy with how the team played overall, and the girls missed only a few shots throughout the entire tournament. "We curled well, but it just wasn't in the cards," he said. The other local rink at districts was the second Comp boys' team, consisting of skip Dallas Mahnic, third Jared Nimegeers, second Darryl Dammann and lead Derek Stronge, all Grade 10 students. Also competing in Redvers, the boys won their first game versus Gladmar, but lost their second and their third game to Redvers. All considered, said coach Garnet Hart, "we did well for a young team." |
