It was a big weekend for the Weyburn Peewee Youngfellows, as they averted elimination from league playoffs on Friday and won their second straight SHA provincial championship on Sunday. Weyburn was already leading Rosetown 9-1 going into the second game of the provincials at the Colosseum, but Rosetown was not about to roll over and play dead, as they battled Weyburn to a 3-2 potboiler. Rosetown opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the game, but Jon Neuberger responded for the Youngfellows shortly after, assisted by Adam Shirkie and Dylan Spencer. Goalie Cam Irwin got the nod for Weyburn and was solid in net, as was his counterpart from Rosetown; the game remained tied 1-1 until Nick Cugnet scored six minutes into the third, assisted by Spencer and Rhys Thomas. Rosetown tied it up at 12:00, but Weyburn retook the lead as Neuberger scored his second goal of the game off Logan Rinas and Shirkie. No one scored for the remainder of the game. The total combined scores of both games was 12-3 for Weyburn, giving them the provincial title. The Youngfellows' run at the championship was altogether an impressive one, as they scored a whopping 59 goals in four sets of two games. The parents of the players are all very proud of the team, not only for their accomplishments on the ice, but their sportsmanship off the ice. On Friday, Weyburn successfully prevented themselves from being booted from SSMHL League playoffs by defeating Balgonie 4-3. Balgonie was up 1-0 in a best-of-three series after defeating Weyburn 6-5 the previous week. The game began with Balgonie jumping out to an early 2-0 lead only three minutes into the first period, but Weyburn's Nathan Deck cut the lead in half three minutes before the period ended off an assist from defensive partner Dave Wagner. Braydon Regier tied it up 19 seconds into the second, assisted by Reid Paterson; Weyburn took the lead off Deck's second goal at the nine-minute mark of the second period. Wagner put Weyburn up 4-2 at 17:00, giving the Youngfellows the lead in the third. Balgonie managed one more goal, but goaltender Kray "Fuzzy" Barnstable shut the door on the rest of Balgonie's offence. Game 3 of the series was played last night, April 1, in Vibank, but results are not available due to publication deadlines. |
