The Weyburn Peewee Youngfellows added another feather to their cap on April 1, as they defeated the Balgonie Prairie Storm to win the league championship. The Youngfellows won Game 3 of their series with Balgonie by a score of 4-3 in overtime. It was a stunning comeback for the Youngfellows, who had been down 3-1 going into the third period of play. The game between Weyburn and Balgonie started with the Prairie Storm scoring the only goal of the first period. Weyburn tied it up 1-1 four minutes into the second, as Brock Struthers scored off assists from Logan Rinas and Kray "Fuzzy" Barnstable. Balgonie scored twice more in the period to lead Weyburn 3-1 going into the third. But the Youngfellows proved they would never give up, and backed by the superb Barnstable in net, managed a comeback. David Wagner scored first at the 11-minute mark of the third period, assisted by Shaun Stroeder and Braydon Regier. The team worked their butts off in the final few minutes, pulling their goalie to get an extra man. It paid off, as Regier tied it up just three seconds before the end off Struthers and Nick Cugnet, sending the game into overtime. Colton Jensen proved to be the overtime hero, as he scored at the four-minute mark from Struthers and Nathan Deck, ending the game 4-3. It was an amazing end to the Youngfellows' season, which saw them win their second straight provincial title. Balgonie, who were the AA provincial champions, had been the favourite to win, having lost only four games all year, including two losses to Weyburn. It was also the first time a Weyburn peewee team won the league championship since 1983. |
