'Fantastic' response to the TV Auction, says YF chair

The Young Fellows Club of Weyburn auctioned about 15 more items this year than last year at its annual TV auction Saturday afternoon and evening.

Auction chairman Scott Benning said a total of 550 items, from bicycles to speakers, to drills and celebrity shoes, went out the doors during the eight hours the auction was held. The business and community response was fantastic, he said.

"There were good crowds in the late afternoon and evening at McKenna Hall," he said. The auction was televised on Access TV.

"There were a good number of bids received throughout the day," said Benning.

He said the top price received for any one item was about $400 received for a ride on a CP locomotive. "That was about the most expensive item," he said.

An Edmonton Oilers jersey autographed by Ryan Smith went for $300.

"It's a little less than a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey signed by the former goaltender and auctioned last year but it's always hard to guess what the response will be," he said. "Maybe there are more Maple Leaf fans here than Edmonton Oiler fans."

The auction was very similar to those of the past 46 years, he said. "Everything went smoothly. "There are always a few things here and there we'd like to improve but there will definitely be a 47th auction next year."

Benning said it takes about 40 members of the Young Fellows to gather the items, organize and operate the auction. "I wouldn't even want to guess how much time each person volunteers," he said.

Next year's auction chair will be Al Kimber.
