Guns from the grandstand

Demolition crew members show some of the materials they found encased in the concrete foundation for the grandstand, including rifles and leaf springs. From left, they are Tyler MacNaughton, contractor Bernie Schmidt and Kevin Williams. There were various old rifles found in .45 and .50-calibre sizes, one with a date of 1918 stamped on it. The gun Williams is holding had the date of April 17, 1886 stamped on it. Schmidt said these and other items, such as cam shafts, drive shafts, bumpers and pistons, were used as rebar in the concrete.

Exposed interior

A crane works away on Wednesday afternoon at scooping away rubble from the side of the creamery building, where one wall is torn away and the interior is totally exposed. Demoliton crews with Jerry Mainil Ltd. started last week on tearing down the creamery building, which was once owned by Agri-Foods International before ownership was transferred to the City of Weyburn. The creamery was roughly 86 years old, having been built in 1917.
